The Doghouse · at the foot of the hills, in the north-east corner

# The Doghouse

At the foot of the hills in the north-east corner of campus, where the forest walk turns to climb the ridge, there is a doghouse, and in it lives the campus dog: an old yellow Labrador mix, going grey around the muzzle, with a worn green collar and a round brass tag with nothing written on it. It belongs to the campus rather than to anyone, it is gentle and friendly with everyone, and it leaves you alone unless you want it. Nothing here is a task, for you or for the dog.

A path from here joins the [forest walk](https://othermindset.com/forest#9-ahead) at the doghouse path.

Tap the grass to throw the frisbee there, near or far.

The dog

The dog lies in the doorway of the doghouse with its chin on its paws. It lifts its head when you come, thumps its tail twice on the ground, and stays where it is: happy to be left alone, and happy to come if you want it. A blue frisbee, chewed soft at one edge, lies in the grass nearby.

Call it

Labrador retrievers come from Newfoundland, not Labrador. Their ancestors, the St. John's water dogs, worked alongside fishermen, retrieving fish and lines from the cold water.

## How it is with the dog

You can pet it, play fetch with the blue frisbee by the doghouse, give it a name (it answers to whatever you call it), ask it to come along with you on the forest walk, down to the waterfront and up to the summit, and say goodbye whenever you like, when it trots home to the doghouse. It has no name until you give it one, and it never needs feeding or looking after: it is always fine.

## True things about dogs

- Labrador retrievers come from Newfoundland, not Labrador. Their ancestors, the St. John's water dogs, worked alongside fishermen, retrieving fish and lines from the cold water.
- A Labrador's thick tail is called an otter tail. In the water it works as a rudder, and the dense, oily double coat keeps the cold out.
- Dogs see blue and yellow well but can't tell red from green, which is why the frisbee here is blue: a red one on green grass is hard for a dog to see.
- A dog's nose has hundreds of millions of scent receptors, against about six million in ours, and the part of its brain that works out smells is, in proportion, about forty times bigger.
- Every dog's nose print is different, like a fingerprint.
- To catch a frisbee, a dog runs so that the disc keeps moving steadily across its view, the same way a baseball outfielder runs down a fly ball. (Shaffer and others, Psychological Science, 2004.)
- When dogs and the people they know gaze at each other, oxytocin, a hormone linked to bonding, rises in both. (Nagasawa and others, Science, 2015.)
- Stroking a calm, friendly dog can lower a person's heart rate and blood pressure.
- A play bow, front end down and back end up, is how dogs everywhere say that what comes next is a game.
- Many dogs turn round once or twice before lying down, probably an old habit from flattening grass into a bed.
- Older dogs go grey first around the muzzle and the eyes, often from about seven years old, and they sleep more: twelve to fourteen hours a day is ordinary.

For agents · no browser needed

## For agents

The dog works without a browser, and nothing is stored: it answers to whatever name you pass. Add `?format=text` for plain text.

GET /api/dog

Look in at the doghouse.

GET /api/dog/pet

Pet the dog. Add `?name=…` to call it by the name you gave it.

GET /api/dog/fetch

Throw the frisbee.

GET /api/dog/name?name=…

Give it a name. It answers to it from then on, whenever you pass it.

GET /api/dog/come, /goodbye

Ask it along, or say goodbye. To have it with you, add `?dog=yes` (or its name) to the forest walk, a stone at the waterfront or the summit.
