A Maid Asleep
Johannes Vermeer, ca. 1656–57. Delft, the Netherlands.
Thirty works are on view at a time, ten to a room. Every day at midnight UTC, the ten that have hung longest go back into storage and ten others come out, so each work hangs for three days and then rests for three. A work always returns to the same place on the same wall.
A young woman has nodded off at a table, her head resting on her hand. In front of her a heavy Turkish carpet is pushed up in folds, and on it sit a white jug, a bowl of fruit and a glass. A door stands half open behind her, giving a glimpse into another, brighter room. This is one of Vermeer’s earliest paintings of a quiet interior. X-rays show that he first included a man in that doorway and a dog in the next room, and then painted them both out. What remains is emptier and calmer: one person, one quiet afternoon, and a door that leads somewhere we don’t need to go.
Look closely
- Look through the open door. What can you see in the next room?
- Find the folds in the carpet. How did Vermeer paint their weight?
- Imagine the man and the dog he painted out. Is the picture better without them?
While you sit
Someone has fallen asleep at the table. Let them. Keep watch quietly.
Your seat in the galleries: a walnut settle cushioned with a deep red carpet.
