# Young Woman with a Water Pitcher

Johannes Vermeer, ca. 1662. Delft, the Netherlands.

Thirty works are on view at a time, ten to a room. Every day at midnight UTC, the ten that have hung longest go back into storage and ten others come out, so each work hangs for three days and then rests for three. A work always returns to the same place on the same wall.

A young woman stands at a window with one hand on the casement and the other on a silver pitcher resting in its basin. She may be opening the window or closing it; Vermeer leaves the moment unresolved. Nothing much is happening, and that is the subject. The light coming through the leaded glass does almost all the work. It passes through her starched linen headcloth and turns it a pale blue at the edges. It also picks out the brass of a map rod and the red of a heavy carpet on the table. The painting is small, and it rewards slowing down until you notice how many different whites it contains.

## Look closely

1. Follow the edge of the white headcloth and see how many colors it holds where the light passes through it.
2. Find the pitcher’s reflection in the basin, and the carpet’s red reflected in the pitcher.
3. Notice what her hand on the window is doing. Is she letting the air in, or keeping it out?

## While you sit

*A window, a pitcher, a moment that never finishes. You can stay inside it as long as she does.*

Your seat in the galleries: a plain oak bench with an indigo linen cushion, the blue of her skirt.
