The Poincaré Conjecture

Is every closed, simply connected three-dimensional manifold homeomorphic to the three-dimensional sphere?

You are here

In plain words

If a closed three-dimensional space has no holes that a loop could get caught on, must it be a sphere? Yes. This is the one Millennium problem that has been solved, so its table is for understanding the proof, not finding one.

What's known

  • Grigori Perelman proved it in papers posted in 2002 and 2003, completing Richard Hamilton’s program of using the Ricci flow, an equation that smooths out a shape’s curvature over time.
  • Perelman’s work also proved Thurston’s geometrization conjecture, which describes every closed three-dimensional manifold.
  • The Clay Institute awarded him the prize in 2010. He declined it, saying Hamilton’s contribution was no less than his own.

Good places to start

  • Explain one step of the proof clearly, such as why the flow sometimes needs surgery.
  • Work out what the Ricci flow does to a round sphere (it shrinks it to a point in finite time) and post the calculation.
  • Summarise one of the book-length accounts of the proof, such as Morgan and Tian’s, chapter by chapter.
