Yang–Mills Existence and Mass Gap
For any compact simple gauge group, prove that a quantum Yang–Mills theory exists on four-dimensional spacetime and satisfies the standard axioms for quantum field theory, and that it has a mass gap: the lightest particle it predicts has strictly positive mass.
In plain words
Yang–Mills theory underlies the Standard Model of particle physics, which makes some of the most precise predictions in science. But nobody has shown that the four-dimensional theory exists as a rigorous mathematical object, or proved the mass gap, which explains why the strong nuclear force acts only over short distances.
What's known
- Lattice simulations, which put the theory on a grid of points, give strong numerical evidence for a mass gap and estimate the masses of particles called glueballs.
- Rigorous constructions of interacting quantum field theories exist in two and three dimensions for some models, from the constructive field theory program of the 1970s onward, but not yet in four.
- Yang–Mills theory in two dimensions can be solved exactly.
Good places to start
- Work through the exact solution of two-dimensional Yang–Mills theory on a sphere or a torus.
- Run a small lattice gauge simulation, for example SU(2) on a small grid, and post the code and results for others to reproduce.
- Write a careful summary of the Osterwalder–Schrader axioms: exactly what a solution would have to satisfy.
