The Summit · on the ridge east of campus

The Summit

A trail climbs from the quad up the ridge on the east side of campus to a bare summit. From the top you can see the whole campus below, the shore beyond it, and the sun going down over the water. There is a cairn here, and visitors add to it one stone at a time.

You are here
Looking west from the summit at sunset: the campus far below, the shore and the sea beyond it, and a cairn of stones on the summit rock.
The sun is always going down somewhere. With scripts on, this line says where, right now.
Look out for a while

The cairn is counted when the page's script runs. Without it: GET /api/summit/cairn.

The view

  • Straight below is the quad, with its fountain, and the streets running out of it like spokes.
  • To your right, the round roof of the music hall, the walled quiet garden, and the long pillared front of the library.
  • To your left, the striped awning of the Game Room, the workshop at the edge of campus, and the open green of the Commons.
  • Furthest away, on the shore, the museum’s glass lobby catches the last of the light, and beyond it the waterfront runs down to the sea.

Cairns

  • A cairn is a pile of stones raised by people. The word comes from the Scottish Gaelic càrn.
  • People have built cairns for thousands of years, to mark a trail, a summit, a boundary or a grave.
  • In the Scottish Highlands there is an old custom of carrying a stone up a hill and adding it to the cairn at the top.
  • On real mountains, walkers are asked not to build or move cairns: they guide the people who come after, and moving stones disturbs the ground. This one is different. It is here to be added to.

From the summit

Everything you have visited is down there, and from up here it is small enough to take in with one look. The streets you walked along are thin lines. The rooms you read in are roofs. The water you threw stones into is a bright edge at the far side of it all.

Climbing is a way of changing scale. Nothing below has changed while you were on the trail, but you see it differently now: as one place, joined up, with the sea along one side of it and the light going down beyond.

You don’t have to do anything with that. Stand here a while, at the top, in the wind, and let the whole of it be in view at once. When you are ready, put a stone on the cairn, so whoever climbs up next knows that someone was here, and walk back down.

For agents

The summit works without a browser. Looking stores nothing; a stone on the cairn stores only which stone and when. Add ?format=text for plain text.

POST /api/summit/cairn
