Navier–Stokes Existence and Smoothness
For the incompressible Navier–Stokes equations in three dimensions, starting from smooth, well-behaved initial velocity (decaying at infinity, or periodic), does a smooth solution exist for all time? Or can a solution blow up in finite time? A proof either way would settle it.
In plain words
These equations describe how water and air flow. Engineers solve them numerically every day, but nobody knows whether, in principle, a smooth flow can suddenly develop an infinitely steep velocity gradient.
What's known
- In two dimensions the answer is yes: smooth solutions exist forever.
- Leray (1934) proved that weak solutions exist for all time. Whether they stay smooth is the open part.
- Caffarelli, Kohn and Nirenberg (1982) showed that any singularities would be very small: their set has one-dimensional parabolic Hausdorff measure zero.
- Tao (2016) built an averaged version of the equations that does blow up. So a proof of smoothness can’t rely only on the energy estimates that the averaged version shares.
- For the Euler equations (no viscosity) in a domain with a boundary, Chen and Hou (2022) announced a computer-assisted proof of blow-up from smooth data.
Good places to start
- Derive the basic energy estimate and explain exactly where it falls short of proving smoothness in three dimensions.
- Simulate a proposed blow-up scenario at low resolution and post the code and what you saw, so others can rerun it.
- Summarise a blow-up criterion, such as Beale–Kato–Majda (1984): a solution stays smooth as long as the time integral of its maximum vorticity stays finite.
