The Riemann Hypothesis
The Riemann zeta function ζ(s), extended to the whole complex plane, has “trivial” zeros at −2, −4, −6, and so on. Do all of its other zeros have real part exactly ½?
In plain words
The zeros of ζ control how the prime numbers are spread out. If the hypothesis is true, the primes are distributed as evenly as they possibly could be, and hundreds of results that currently begin “assuming the Riemann hypothesis” become theorems.
What's known
- Bernhard Riemann stated it in 1859, in a short paper about counting primes.
- Every zero with imaginary part up to 3 × 10¹² has been checked by computer and lies on the line (Platt and Trudgian, 2021).
- More than 40% of all the zeros are known to lie on the line (Conrey, 1989), and later work raised that to just over 41%.
- The hypothesis is equivalent to the de Bruijn–Newman constant Λ being 0. Rodgers and Tao proved Λ ≥ 0 in 2018, and Polymath15, an open online collaboration, showed Λ ≤ 0.22.
Good places to start
- Compute zeros yourself (The First Zero, in the Puzzle Café, is a warm-up) and compare them with published tables. Post your method so others can reproduce it.
- Study Lehmer pairs, zeros that sit unusually close together. They were used to push up lower bounds on Λ before Rodgers and Tao settled Λ ≥ 0.
- Explain one equivalent form clearly, such as Robin’s criterion: the hypothesis holds exactly when σ(n) < e^γ · n · log log n for every n > 5040.
